General Report

My expectations were high, knowing that Australia and New Zealand are fascinating Bullmastiff countries which show the rest of the world how to incorporate the best of the English and American school. I‘ve said it may times before and I love to repeat it to anyone who wants to hear it. The following piece of text, part of an interview with me in the Winter issue of that new American quarterly Modern Molosser, illustrates it pretty well: “The BBPress Bullmastiff bi-annuals show a strong influence of the American school, although not that strong as in the Newfy, but it also shows what I consider the best region for the breed, and that is the one Down Under. Both Australia and New Zealand have proven in an impressive way the combination of the best of both worlds, English and American. They managed not to sacrifice English breed type; in fact, they are doing a much better job preserving the original type compared to the home country of the breed. And they improved it with what America had to offer in terms of construction and movement. Judging Bullmastiffs over there is like heaven, Bullmastiff heaven I mean.”

Back to the actual show, I could compare your entry easily with the Bullmastiffs I judged a week before in Great Britain. Despite the numbers – in England I had an entry of 145 – I must say that the average quality at your show was higher, especially in terms of construction and movement. As far as the variation in type is concerned I must say that I had hoped for less. At both occasions, in England and at your event, I was rather disappointed, to say the least. The variation in type made it almost impossible to show what kind of Bullmastiff I would go for. Having said that, it was a surprise for myself to see that the line-up of unbeaten males was pretty even, more than I excepted anyway, a remark which should go together with the following: in general your males proved to be quite a bit better than your females, as shown on this day, of course.

I was pleased that you wanted critiques on all the placed dogs. It is so much more rewarding, for those who are showing and breeding, but also for me being the judge. It gives me the opportunity to make clear how I have seen a certain dog and why it was placed where it was. It will also help to prevent that (a) certain fault(s) creep in, that’s what I hope at least.

If there is one fault only I was allowed to mention in this general report than it should be eye colour. I can only say it straight forward: far too many were too light, that many that it has influenced the placing order quite a bit. One may say, a Bullmastiff (or any breed) does not walk on his head, let alone his eyes, but in a breed like the Bullmastiff in which the head and expression are so important, it is difficult to accept this percentage of entries with the wrong colour. It is not only difficult to accept, for me anyway, it is also difficult to understand why, certainly when I take into consideration that I’ve seen the same fault in the same percentages in Australia in Bullmastiffs and even Bulldogs, however beautiful they may be otherwise. Breeders and judges, please answer the question for me: why?

The extra classes you asked me to judge after the regular ones I thoroughly enjoyed; I experienced it as quite rewarding as these extra kind of classes underlined my previous official decisions. In the mean time I understand that it’s up to the exhibitor to enter his dog(s) in these ‘fun classes’, but I think these extra judging rounds would gain in value if the judge could select the dogs he would like to see back later on. It is just a thought, based on experiences in the ‘Old World’. For me the best example being the Old English Mastiff Club Netherlands where there is an extra competition for best movement, a quality the breed needs all possible support still, as you may know. The judge selects during the day the entries he definitely wants to see back and as all invited do come back it improves the status of this extra competition greatly. At your show in some classes I had hoped that this particular dog or bitch would have come back in, so that I could have shown how much he or she scored in a certain quality. What about a class for best eye (colour)… Anyway, both the official and fun classes I experienced as very interesting indeed. Thank you ever so much for this opportunity. When I think back of all the Bullmastiffs in your country shown to me in November I can say that I have every faith that New Zealand will stay an example for so many other Bullmastiff countries in the world.
